Articulation Therapy for Children and Adolescents
Pressure is increasing on school-based speech-language pathologists to treat children with more complex cognitive-linguistic disabilities. The time required to prepare and implement these interventions leaves little opportunity to address children’s articulation disorders. Children with articulation disorders are frequently, by necessity treated in a group for less than 30 minutes per session, with little customization of the program to individual children’s needs.
Voicewize provides targeted, affordable speech therapy, by a licensed speech-language pathologist, for children and adolescents with articulation disorders. Beginning with a complete individual assessment of your child’s speech sounds, we will work with you to create a plan of care that will maximize your child’s progress, while striving to avoid “therapy burnout”.
Voicewize is a provider with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Tufts Health Plan. Check with your health plan, as not all plans cover articulation therapy.
Articulation, Voice and Language
Parents are often confused by the many terms used to describe the components of communication.
Articulation refers to the way in which the mouth, tongue, jaw and other parts are moving to create the sounds of speech. When one of the body parts misses its target, sounds will sound distorted or mistaken.
Voice refers to the sound that comes from the throat. Normal voice is smooth and carries across distances. Abnormal voice may sound hoarse or strained.
Language refers to the way in which the brain selects the words it will use and how those words are organized and understood. This may apply to how a person expresses him or herself or how a person understands others.
