This half-day interactive workshop provides high school and college-age students with a multi-level communication framework for success and self-confidence in interviews for college or entry-level jobs. Throughout the program, both interview content and presentation style are addressed.
The workshop is led by communication specialists, who provide students with information on what to expect in an interview, and use humorous examples from popular culture to illustrate specific non-verbal behaviors that can contribute to an interviewer's impression, such as tone of voice, eye contact, and body language. Strategies to manage nervousness and fear are covered, including relaxation techniques and positive self-talk.
Students practice shaping their language to communicate what is unique about themselves and learn to frame their strengths and weaknesses in a positive context. Ample opportunities are provided to observe and practice these techniques in a fun and supportive setting, receiving feedback from peers and workshop leaders.
Participants will generate individual practice plans tailored to their specific needs. With this brief experience, the concept of the college or entry-level job interview can be transformed from a mysterious or even dreaded interrogation to an exciting opportunity for students to engage about their unique experiences and hopes for the future.
